I really don't think it has anything to do with the ( for lack of a better word ) "Trekkie" mentality (i.e. dressing up as a movie or tv character). I am a big star trek fan. I have autographs of a couple of original series cast members, I read some of the books, I am buying the DVD's as soon as they're coming out, etc, etc. I've never, ever been to a star trek convention. I don't own a single stitch of star trek-esque clothing. I have no interest in doing so either. I am ordering a Wested, I'm a big fan of the Indy movies. I know many others who are "worse" ( bad word, I know ) star trek fans than I, and many of them do have girlfriends and kids, and normal lives. I'm almost 23 and I've never had a date, let alone a gf and it has nothing to do with wanting to be like Indy or Kirk or Picard or anyone else. I'm just that shy and withdrawn. I know buying a Wested is not going to change that...I just like the jacket. How well you function in society or in love has more to do with your self-confidence and personality than anything else. A lot of people use these characters as a crutch to avoid dealing with people. Maybe I do that, I don't know, since I feel that no one can judge himself fairly. Using that crutch is not signified by rabid devotion to a show, but rather how you treat everyone around you in the real world. Star trek fans get a bad rap I think because it's easy to find a convention and pick people out and say "gee, you need a life" It has nothing to do with that though. It' all a matter of the person you are when the Indy clothes or the Trek Uniform is off, since that's the person that's going to be walking through your girlfriend's front door the other 364 days/year, that's the person that really matters. The message here is to go ahead and buy your indy whip and replica gun with holster, just don't forget there's a world out there that's just as good as the one on the screen.

I just feel I have to stick up for the trek fans a bit here.

: If you look back at Dirk Pitt's original post he was asking about people buying IMPRACTICAL Indy gear and this is what I was responding to. I wasn't thinking about people wearing the clothes as separate items. That wouldn't bother me at all. Everyone needs a jacket when it's cold so you might as well wear the Wested if you like it. Same for the pants and a good pair of boots is a good pair of boots.
: It's only the practice of dressing up in order to LOOK LIKE INDY that I find laughable. On their own I think most of the Indy clothes are fine (except for the fedora, I can't wear hats)
: But you can't deny that many people who buy up these Indy articles aren't just looking for a good pair of pants. We've all seen posts asking where someone can get a replica of Indy's gun. What earthly purpose could someone have for a gun that doesn't shoot? They just want it so they can look like Indy. In that instance the person is very much like the Trekkies I mentioned earlier. I don't mind people wearing pointy ears if they think it makes them hear better or look more attractive but lets face it, most of these guys who wear Spock ears just want to pretend that they're Vulcans. That's alright for a weekend at a convention but I would laugh at them if I saw them at the grocery store.
: Same with someone dressed head to toe like Indy complete with bullwhip and fake Webley.

: Incidentally, I didn't mean to rank on anyones sex life. Hell, my own isn't all quivering flesh and edible undies.
