: : Alabama Smith was the name of one of the pilots in the John Wayne movie"Flying Tigers",a film almost as good as Raiders. Also, while the other pilots wore standard bomber jakets, with the elstisized fabric at the wrists and waist,Alabama's was like Indy's.

: Yeah, I really like that movie too. LL Bean offers a Flying Tigers A-2 goatskin jacket that I purchased a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly the movie takes place in China before the US got involved in the war. I always thought it was made in the early 40's, before Pearl harbor, and served in getting people more aware of what was going on in China at the time. May be wrong on this though. Steve

The first AVG (Flying Tiger) mission was flown on Dec.22, 1941, 15 days after Pearl Harbor. The US was already in the war. These pilots were not part of the Army then. They flew as a separate unit until July of 1942, when a few of them were incorporated into the Army Air Force. Mose declined to enlist. I once had the pleasure of meeting David Lee "Tex" Hill, and AVG groou leader, who worked with John Wayne on the movie.
