: The first AVG (Flying Tiger) mission was flown on Dec.22, 1941, 15 days after Pearl Harbor. The US was already in the war. These pilots were not part of the Army then. They flew as a separate unit until July of 1942, when a few of them were incorporated into the Army Air Force. Most declined to enlist. I once had the pleasure of meeting David Lee "Tex" Hill, and AVG group leader, who worked with John Wayne on the movie.
