"Ned" was Thomas Edward's family nickname and dated back to his childhood. It was used by family intimates and close friends; it's unlikely that TEL would have been known as Ned to his professional colleagues.
By the way, a "psycho-biography" of TEL entitled "A Prince of Our Disorder" (forget author) has numerous details and photos (including a nice pic of the fateful Brough "Superior") that should delight any Indy fan.
