Infernal Machine - help, please!

I am stuck near the beginning of the game in the Babylon level. I can't for the life of me seem to be able to make the jump on to the roof of the Russian communication building. I've tried many times, running and jumping off the tall block, but I keep falling short. First I press 'shift' then the 'up arrow' key and then 'Alt' at the last minute. Is there some kind of super jump move that I don't know about? Or is there simply a way around this problem as its driving me nuts? Also, does the whole game consist of jumping from block to block? I hope not because this bouncing around kind of game-play seriously detracts from the Indy atmosphere of the game for me. Why couldn't it have been more like 'Goldeneye' where there is a sense of being in a film when solving each level instead of simply being a 3d platform game with Indy standing in for Mario? Enough moaning - back to the game.
