I haven't read the whole novel (I generally don't read the SW novels, although, I did recently get through all four movie adaptions), but I have read the section where Chewie dies. I thought it was pretty "heroic". It just didn't seem to have much significance (I think it was about halfway through the book). What he did was good, but it wasn't the turning point in the story that cemented our heroes victory (I've heard there is actually more emphasis placed on the impact it has on Han, but I didn't read enough of the book to know for sure).

I understand why it was done, but I think there could have been better ways to rekindle interest in the original group of SW characters than by killing one of them.
