I have seen some HD material and the line structure virtually dissappears, making it more like film than consumers have ever seen. We are so used to NTSC that we actually believe it is "good enough." When the public sees demos of large widescreen 720 progressive video, it will be like seeing color after B&W. Things will move quicker than anyone thinks as convergence occurs with the computer industry. Right now, people may have progressive HD quality video available, sitting right on their desks. A computer equipped with a DVD drive and a good video card has better than NTSC quality video and coupled with a large monitor or projector will replace the traditional television/player/cable box system in many cases. Lucasfilm may be wise to wait for the 720 progressive format, which would bring DVD in line with the HDTV standards. However, Lucasfilm can be seen as either being "kind" to consumers in waiting for that or they have been advised that they can make more money on its VHS sales first in 2000 and then on digital in 2001. They are real the winners either way. Then HDTV will come. Just like computers, every 4/5/6 years, we will need to upgrade. Hopefully by then, it will be a modular computer platform, not the expensive stand-alone black boxes we now use. The quality is there and it is good, but the speed at which we adopt depends on price, ease of use, marketing and demonstrations which will impress consumers.
