How Indy survived the submarine trip to the island in Raiders

This goes back to a debate I remember seeing some months ago in this forum. I think I can settle the question finally. The problem with Indy's sub trip was that people thought that he should have drowned somwhere along the way, considering the distance.

I had argued that in 1936, Germany was not at war. Uboats ran along the surface for the most part, or at periscope depth. They only went real deep if attacked.

Well, I just got "The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark" by Derek Taylor through ebay. In the section of photographs is a picture of Harrison Ford as Indy clinging to the periscope as it cruises through the water. He is wet, but is above the waterline. Of course, if the captain had thrown in a training drill along the way, we would have had a dead Indy clinging to the periscope. But since they were on a top secret mission in a hurry, I think that is unlikely.

So there we have it.
