On the serials of the 30's and 40's that Raiders was based on, the hero would often survive a cliffhanger ending in the next reel that was patently impossible, ie: a car went over the cliff and the audience saw it happen without anybody getting out. But in the next episode, you would see the hero roll out of the car and escape when he clearly had not done so. For the writers of that time, that was a blatant cheat. But the writer of Indy, Kasdan, Lucas, or Spielberg, or whoever may have intentionally made the scene as a 'homage' to those bygone days.
