: I know that in the few scenes where we actually see Indy in the classroom he seems competent and the students pay rapt attention. Although I think they only pay attention because they all seem to be hot for him. Anyway, how good a teacher do you think Indy was really?
: He seems to treat teaching almost as a sideline and is always ready to drop everything and go traipsing off.
: I personally would not want to take a class from a teacher who couldn't be trusted to show up for class for more than a week at a time.

: What do you think?

Based on the few scenes of him teaching (in the classroom in Raiders
and LC and giving a short lecture to the Feds regarding the lost ark),
I'd say Indy was quite interesting and could keep students' attention
(including those who were not just drooling). As far as jumping out
the window to avoid a rush of students... well I am a college professor
and there are times I wish I could have done that (unfortunately, my
office is on the second floor) :-) I know colleagues who have missed
student appointments for far less than tracking down an artifact before
the Nazis could get it... missing classes is more distressing for me.
However, we're never told just how many classes he missed when he was
gone. For example, his classes might meet only twice each week (e.g.,
Tues. and Thurs.). If he left right after class on Thursday, he could
have been gone a full four days and return for class on Tuesday, or
even have canceled the Tuesday class and return on Thursday, having a
full week to complete his adventure. I've canceled classes for a day
to attend a conference without any undue interruption in my students'
education (I usually have the class covered by a colleague).

Just my view :-)

Professor Jones
