In fact, the original group... uh... Brownshirts I think they called themselves... was very largely gay. Then as he came into power Hitler learned that the peope of Germany didn't approve of them, so he turned on them for public relations reasons.
Hitler, like modern US politicians (particulary a certain president) made a lot of decisions based on public opinion polls. It doesn't excuse what he did, but he was acting on the people's fears and predjudices, particularly with the Jews, who had been feared and hated in Europe for centuries at that point.
It's sad to think that's where we're going in America.
