Perhaps it was caused by shell shock. This was when the troops would be defenseless sitting in their trenches, with the enemy ammunition exploding just feet from them, and all they could do was duck and pray that nothing would happen. Most of the troops would have high anxeity, and loss of concetration. This was the first time in a war that the medical staff included doctors that would treat only mental wounds. To releive the stress of "shell shock", they would rotate those soldiers who had the symptoms up to the side battle lines along with wounded officers.

And also maybe he suspected that Indy was American (I don't recall what year the story took place).
