Perhaps whatever triggers the spikes is some kind of magnifying crystal that turns the light into a focused beam that leads to some kind of heat-sensitive metal, which expands and contracts in response to the heat from the focused light beam, triggering a fun surprise when the heat source is blocked. Mind you, the metal would have to be extremely sensitive to react that quickly, but stranger things have happened in Indy movies (i.e., flaming hearts, melting Nazis, and such).
