A Sallah question

Ahoy fellow Indyfans,
Okay, we all know that Sallah has a bunch of kids (better than the US Marine Corps, by his own admission), so he has to have a decent job. But what did he do for a living? I remember Indy making mention of him being a digger (is that what he said?) in Raiders, but surely he did more than that. Back in the old days, many an Egyptian made quite a profitable living by looting old graves and selling them on the black market. Surely our beloved Sallah would not stoop to Belloq's level. Right? Did any of the novels mention what Sallah did? If so, I must have missed it. What's the opinion of you guys? Thanks for your time.
