Secret of the Incas (1954, charlton heston), and hong kong (1950's, ronald reagan) are difficult to find, but mentioned as forerunners of the indiana jones movies.

Gunga din (really awesome). This is where the thugee idea came from.
Big trouble in little china has the same feel, but it isn't really similar to indiana jones.
romancing the stone (avoid the sequel, jewel of the nile).

six days/seven nights (sort of, harrison ford is playing a similar character at least)
