I think you've missed something too in your assessment that the real core of these films is archaeology. As Belloq says in the first film (paraphrase) "we've both fallen from the pure path" of strict archaeology. In every film, Indy is portrayed as something of a treasure hunter. So to that end, I'd argue that Temple does the best job of capturing the essence of the character. It's a whole movie along the lines of the opener to Raiders, which I'd argue is about the best 10 minutes of cinema ever commited to celluoid.
Just my $0.02 - worth exactly what you paid for it.
