Something I've Always Wondered - HOW DOES INDY KNOW NOT TO LOOK AT THE OPENED ARK IN RAIDERS?

Indy doesn't seem to sure about what the stuff coming out of the Ark is in the book at the beginning. He says "power of God or something."
How did he know it would kill you if you looked at it.
