Can Someone Explain What Each Item Does On The ROTLA Atari Game? PLEASE!!!

I have the raiders of the lost ark atari game and don't think I have ever beat it. I know HOW to beat it, but I'm just not sure what all the items really do! I have other questions too:
1) Is that Toht that chases you after freefalling into the tste flies area?

2) How do I operate the map room part?

3) What does it mean at the end and beginning of a game when indy is hovering over the ark on that ladder looking thing?

4) What is the point of the spider room?
