1984: The year of the funny Chinese kid!

Hey did any of you people realise this? 1984 seemed to sort of be a
year featuring funny Chinese kids in hit films. First, the most
obvious to us, is good ol' Short Round in Indiana Jones and the
Temple of Doom
, the 2nd is Long Duck Dong from Sixteen
Candles
. Hmmm... interesting coincidence. Also, in the opening
sequence of Gremlins, there is a Chinese kid who dresses a little bit
like Short Round (with the baseball cap and all) but isn't acting
funny and doesn't have the accent. Any thoughts on this? (Especially
the people who were old enough to remember 1984 unlike some people who
were about 2 when ToD opened in theatres :)
