They got them through a casting agency, thekid with the parchment however was a real villager who would watch the filming each day and ended up with that small part because he was better than all the agency kids.

: Did anyone ever wonder about where they got the malnourished children to act in Temple? Were they real kids working for food? Especially that one kid who escapes and brings Indy the piece of cloth.
