Actually the belly is the core of the whip - basically the whip within the whip. If you have a 12 plait DM, your whip has 2 plaited bellies.

Belly side down? Did DM tell you that? I've noticed that all the DM's I've seen have a slight bend there the bellies attach to the handle - is this what he's referring too?
