I think the plane was in fact there to fly out the Ark. Maybe there was supposedly had a bomb-bay door or something underneath to access a cargo recess. But you're right- you wouldn't normally use an experimental military fighter/bomber plane to move cargo. But it sure did look cool. Interestingly enough, although the plane is fictional, I was reading some books recently about German flying wings, and there were some very similar-looking plane designs being experimented with at that time.
