Where did George Lucas get the idea for Indiana Jones?

Hello, members of this elite forum:

I know that Lucas got the idea for Star Wars from old Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon movies. And he got the plot to the first Star Wars film from Kurasowa's The Hidden Fortress, but what about Indy?

I know Indy is based on the "old adventure seriels", but what seriels? Do you know the name of these movies or the Indy-like characters in them? Where can I see these movies? Is there some kind of Nevada Smith that Lucas based the Indy name on? Is Raiders of the Lost Ark an original story or is it a ripoff story like Star Wars?

Is there some kind of website that gives a detailed origin of Indy? TELL ME MORE!! I THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE!! LOL.
