Cut scene in TOD

Hey, I don't know if this has been hashed over in previous posts or not - but, ever wonder about the cut scene in TOD? It's where Shorty is trying to get Indy back as Willy is being lowered into the pit.
As Shorty flames Indy, we see guards in the background, hunched over, as if they have been beat up. What happened to the scene showing Shorty make it past these guys to Indy? BTW, how does Shorty know to use fire? I've always wondered that.
