Tom's too sharp and quicktalking. Harrison Ford acts like he got hit on the head real hard in his youth which made him a little slow which makes him facinating to watch-emotions kind of dawn and develop on his face slowly. It also takes some time for him to get words out because he's trying not to lisp because he got his front teeth knocked out by a rifle making a Gunsmoke episode and has to talk around the dental work which you can see behind his front teeth in the bar sceen just before or after Thot says "shoot them..shoot them both." All this slowness just fits 1936 when EVERTHING was slower. I think its interesting that Bogart had a speech impediment also, due to a nerve severed in his upper lip by shrapnel in WWI.
