I think Selleck could have played Indy, but I doubt we would have this forum today if he had. I think Spielberg is right when he talks about how Ford and Indy were meant to be, or how things just "happened" with him in the role. (As the kid said in "6th Sense", "Some magic's real.")

But just as Ford was born to play Indy, Selleck was definitely made for Magnum. They did some really great episodes in that series, none of which would hold up today if Selleck hadn't been completely convincing in the role.
