At this moment we're meant to believe that Indy is dead meat and the first time you see it you actually think he's been shot. The first time I saw it was in a theatre and the surround sound seemed to play a part in tricking me, palcing the origin of the bang in front of the Mongolian. To subliminally see old glory aflame may have been designed to give me a further sense of impending certain doom. The flag may not actually be on fire. It looks to me like it had been pre-burned and I'm seeing flames around it and through it. This may have been necesary to keep it from disapearing too quickly and lasting through who knows how many takes.
