It's been awhile since I've read it too, but it was someone who he knew - I forget his connection to him also, but he broke into the garage and stole it. This was after he spent the night sneaking into a movie, eating at the docks, and stealing a womans pocketbook cos it had a watch in the top. He even scammed her out of a dollar when he pretended to bring her purse back!!
There was also a bit where he was being chased, runs to a roof, and jumps to a clothes line, and swings in through someones window. Kinda set up the bit where, in the mine tunnels, he jumps to the rope hanging from the whole in the ceiling.
