When/where did Indy get his whip?

Okay, so Indy gets a taste for the bullwhip as a boy while tangling with Panama Hat's goons in the desert. A bullwhip then proves handy again while fighting in Mexico during the Revolution. Fast forward to the first novel (Peril at Delphi), when Indy takes his bullwhip along with him, proclaiming it to be a good luck charm. So when did Indy actually acquire his first whip? Did he steal one of the aforementioned whips of his youth? Or was he sitting in Medieval Lit 102 one morning, and he thought to himself "Hey! I oughta buy a whip!" while he was supposed to be appreciating the use of light and shadow in Chaucer? I figure he stole the one from Mexico, but that's just my two cents. Feel free to add your thoughts.
