The quality of felt was much better during the historical time period of the triology and YIJC, as there existed an industry that turned out a good product, and had to, simply because there were so many competitors out there trying to steal your business. The quality of felt in the fedoras could have held up very well, as you had hat cleaners and stores in every town you went to, so you could have your hat conditioned, cleaned and reblocked any time you decided it needed the attention.
