: : : I think the biggest difference between the Akubra and all the rest of the dress hats is its ability not to shrink when exposed to the elements. Really, it became apparent to me, that the Akubra is a work hat. It is meant to worn outside for protection. This hat has been wet numerous times, from sweat as well as from rain, and it still hasn't shrunk. As most of you know, the Miller is notorious for shrinking, but not any more so than the Stetsons that I own. The felt of the Akubra is much stiffer and harder than the felt seen on most dress hats. Seems like the Akubra was made for punishment in the harsh environment of Australia, and from my experience, seems well suited for this. I am waiting on the Campdraft model in the medium brown and look forward to modifying it to see how well it stacks up against the competition. I will of course keep everyone posted. Regards, Steve

: : I’ve noticed the same, particularly with respect to shrinkage. My Nostalgia, which used to have such a nice untapered look, now looks pretty much like the tapered block of a Temple. Too bad – I was a very nice hat when it was new. The Akubra, on the other hand, has seen quite a bit of hot sun and sweat as well as torrential downpours. If anything, it looks better. Yes, it is definitely a work hat!

: Indygear lists several different Akubras. Which, if any, are a good match for the Indy fedora? And how expensive are they?

Personally, I like the Drover. The particular one I picked up at David Morgan's had an unusually high crown - about 6 1/4 unbashed. This could have been due to the crown being proportional to the size of the hat - 7 5/8. Anyway, you can see mine on IndyGear. It's a bit light in color, but it is a teriffic hat.

Cheers!
