: Well, we really don't know, do we. The three movies took place before America was involved in the war, and for that fact, war wasn't really rolling in Europe yet during the datelines of the trilogy, so we don't know what happened to him during the 40's. As to WWI, he volunteered, based on the YIJC ,in the Belgium army, so no, he wasn't drafted there either.

Well, there has been a long standing practice in the Armed services to not draft the only son!! Perhaps, the truth lies there!!
