Laserdiscs have been quite popular with the home theater crowd for a while, since it was the only real high quality video format (in letterbox format) with a lot of titles. If you had a large screen TV and wanted digital sound, this was the way to go. But with players costing $1000 and discs $30-$70 per title, it never could appeal to the masses. Now DVDs offer the same thing (even better picture, some say the sound is not as good) but at the price of VHS- no wonder they've taken of like crazy. DVDs also use a lossy digital compression scheme, which casued some laserdisc people to say negative things about them at first, but as the DVD players and sofware have improved, nobody doubt that DVDs are the future and laserdiscs are going the way of the dinosaur. However, laserdisc is still the only format you can watch high quality letterbox copies of Star Wars or Indiana Jones in. Hopefully, that will change soon.

Cheers,
Abner
