Well, the Ford tri-motor engines were independent of each other, and a lot of times the front engine could be "feathered" or plain shut down to conserve fuel, though in this case I doubt it, considering it was trying to climb over the mountains. I agree, continuity wasn't exactly a long suit in this movie. Regards. Michaelson
