I know when he got his whip. If you read the Young Indiana Jones book series, I think there's 16 of them all in all, the very first book, I think it's called the Plantation Adventure, says that he is able to slip his arm out of these ropes tied around him by tightening this bullwhip muscle on his right arm and relaxing it to easily slip out of the ropes. It said he got it from his practice with his bullwhip, which he shortly got after his incident in Utah, where he cut his chin. The Plantation story takes place a year after he meets Fedora.
