I must admit, I have seen that film about a billion times ever since
I was a kid, and I never thought about that! The thing is, when you
are watching it, you get so caught up in the story and the action
that you tend to put your sense of reality and belief on the shelf. But you are absolutely right- there should have been no water and tons of steam pouring out of the mine behind them, sort of like in Fate of Atlantis when Indy throws the electric eel coil into the pool of water, which evaporates into a cloud of steam, leaving a pile of molten slag behind.Exact same principal.

: Just a few minutes earlier as they were in the mine car, we see the layout of the tunnels that the water would travel down.
