Pirates ALWAYS make for a good story! In this case it's the legend of
Sir Francis Drake, Her Majesty's premier freebooter.

June 1579: Captain Francis Drake, about sixty men and one woman (!)
had just failed to find the infamous Northwest Passage. The ship
"Golden Hind" was laden with captured Spanish gold and jewels. Also,
the ship was taking on a lot of water and Drake decided to turn south.
He sailed along the Pacific Northwest until he reached a sheltered
harbor. There are a few possible spots that are still debated as the
location where Drake set foot on dry land, met the local natives and
where he built a fort. One of the more likely locations is just north
of San Francisco at Point Reyes, or more accurately at Drake's Bay.
So far, gold coins have been found on the beach, but no ruins of any
fort. Researchers were once again diving just off the beach, last
year. I haven't heard any reports that anything was found...
Drake was the first to claim North American soil for the British and
interestingly enough, he named the land Nova Albion (New England).

PS: Other possible locations for Drake's fort are Bodega Bay (Hitch-
cock's 'The Birds' was set there), or more north in Oregon.
