Stiffener is used most often on wool because of its poor ability holding shape. Yes, you can buy stiffener from a millinery supplier. While looking at the Petersham offerings I recall seeing that Judith M. Designs carried stiffener. As for "whether you should", and "How" give me a couple of days to get back to you. I've only used it on fabrics. Depending on the material it can discolor. Why can't you reshape the hat with conventional means? Steam, water, or reblocking?---Unknown and/or dubious felt quality?
I did a pretty damn good job reshaping a WOOL hat that my girlfriend found bashed up at the bottom of a thriftstore pile. It just takes a few principles, care, and patience.
Keep me informed
