I have heard the Grail described as a symbol for Gnostic Christianity, Celtic Christianity, and even Cathars and Manichians.

In regard to the drink given Jesus on the cross, the Gospels have this to say:
MATTHEW 27:34  They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
MARK 15:23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.
LUKE 23:36  And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
JOHN 19:29  Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
and
JOHN 19:30  When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
So Matthew says He drank it, Mark and John says He didn't, Luke doesn't say. Note that Matthew uses the term "gall". This may refer to an early form of ingredient of absinth which gives it its narcotic effect.
