: HI Indy Fans,
: I have a question about the fedoras. I just want to know what exactlly makes a new fedora so hard and if it is possible to harden an old one up again? I know hat shops can do repairs and blocking but can they stiffen a beat up old softened hat to make the felt look brand new?

They use a product called "hat stiffner" (how's THAT for a real original name? (grins)) that restores the stiffness to the fedora. Old time hat stores used to use unscented women's hair spray and lightly "dust" the fedora's surface after reshaping, though it's not a real popular way of doing it anymore as the laquer can eventually saturate the felt and make the hat surface as hard as plastic. Needless to say the hat is no longer any good. Check out any decent Western wear store in your area that sells good cowboy hats. They use the hat stiffner to finish those works of art as well. Regards. Michaelson
