Asian International Midnight Livestock Flights?

Exactally how common was it to ship chickens in a small, two engine plane across Asia? Was this a standard practice?

Also, where was Indy going exactally? When he reaches the Village and Pankot (sp?) he says that he has to get back to his university. So why was Indy taking the 'long way?'
