: From what I've learned at the library regarding hatmaking history/evolution of the felthat particularly (please be aware that this is a VERY cursory review): the X-marking given to finished felt has been around for a long time. Unfortunately, X-markings are not standardized, they are a subjective labelling system. There used to be generally agreed upon the limit. However, as competition expanded, beaver resources began to diminish and blends and substitutions came into use, the "honor system" of labelling was threatened. In order to stay ahead many hat retailers began manipulating the X-marking to "stand apart" from the cheesy blends that were using what was once a respected lower X-marking. The range was thrown off. For example, what was once a 3X was being called a 20X, a 5X with extras was being called a 100X, etc.
: Hope this is useful.
