The staff

Ok for once I am posting here not regarding Indy's clothes. In Raiders, why is Indy's staff so long if it is supposed to be 6 whatevers(cant remember the word)which Indy says would be 72", but then the inscription says on the other side minus one. SOOOO, wouldnt that mean like 60". I mean Indy even said "Belloq's Staff is too long." Was it opposite day?(I feel like I'm in kindergarten, sorry for that comment) How long was Belloq's staff, 8 feet? I never got that and thought maybe u guys could shed some light on it.
