Not only is it a real place, but the ongoing excavations at Petra are led by Martha Joukowsky, author of a pretty darn good book on field archaeology techniques. So you know the digging there is going to be top-drawer. Plus, she's a great example of women breaking the glass ceiling of professional archaeology in the late 20th century. Hear, hear!

Following info may be of interest:
By ca. 2100 years ago, "Petra became the center for a spice trade that
extended from Arabia to the Syrian Desert.
In 131 AD Hadrian, the Roman emperor, visited the site and named
it after himself, Hadriane Petra. The city continued to flourish
during the Roman period, with a Triumphal Arch spanning the Siq,
and tomb structures either carved out of the living rock or built
free-standing. Under Roman rule, Roman Classical monuments
abounded — many with Nabataean overtones" (quoted from Brown U website).

the digging may be excellent, but they still have to go home to Brown... ha ha
