Everyone knows how big a fan Steven Speilberg is of Sir David Lean's; anyone who's seen LAWRENCE OF ARABIA knows where a LOT of STAR WARS and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK got their visual inspiration. Lean tried to shoot some of LAWRENCE at Petra, 40 years ago, but couldn't get a film crew to even that remote a location. Perhaps Speilberg wanted to tackle the challenge of shooting at a location that even his hero couldn't get a film crew to.
