I spend quite a bit of time traveling as well, and I agree. I have not gone to the point of taking the gas mask bag, though, and my wife makes me promise to leave the hat at home as well.

On the metal detectors, though - it is the 4 inch steel shank in the sole. It's the one part about wearing the Alden's that is annoying.
