Question about the Raiders' Truck Sequence

When Indy is under the truck, he latches his whip to the undercarrage of the truck. That's the one shot I never cared for because it looks phoney. I mean, it looks like there's a magnate in the whip and it grabs hold of the truck. Anyone have an explination for this?
