Ahhhhhh - Egypt!

When I was in Egypt - not Cairo unfortunately, but up in Aswan, I went to a Nubian wedding after having made friends with one of the Egyptologists on the tour. At the festivities I ended up smoking from the hookah. I'm not much of a smoker but the tobacco that they used gave me an enormous rush and I thought I was talking to a camel. That was just Egyptian blend tobacco and it had quite a kick.

But then again, I'm not a hardened adventurer no matter what I keep telling myself.

Eventually I found out he was smokin' the hooka and wondered whether or not there was tobacco or something slightly more exotic inside. Your point about Belloq being high when he talked of speaking to God is a good one; I'd never considered that. In keeping with a nice Eastern tradition, Cairo is still full of these pipes at bars and coffee houses and offer all sorts of specialty tobacco. As well as other substances, I'm sure...
