From a purely filmmaking stand point, it is more likely than not that the "real" pattern was reserved for HF, and prototypes (after all the paid for them they might as well use them some how. What better use than in the back ground getting eaten up by gravel under a truck or for exploding squibs through the arms) or less expensive ones used for stunt men. Hollywood does not design stunts for people with pause buttons after all, and minor details in design are not much of a concern.

As far as the minor cost differences. We are A) not talking about an exact science and B) we are talking about hollywood folk. Their sense of logic on expenditures can be somewhat mind boggling. You would be surpized what they chose to skimp on, in relation to the overall size of the budget.

My experience is that they will find anyway to save money possible. Especially if they have over spent in another department.

The fact that they spent $20,000 on the HF jacket, might actually increase the possiblity that they would have tried to save money on the others, to make up for the HF one.
