If the SAG strike DOES happen, it would begin in the Spring of next year. As both the Writers Guild and the Directors Guild would likely follow through the summer, and the potential effects on Hollywood film production would be disastrous.

Bill Daniels, president of SAG (some of you might know him as the actor who provided the voice of "KITT", the supercool car of TV's KNIGHTRIDER) has gone on record that all parties involved with to come to terms in order to avoid the strike. Nevertheless, the possibility still exists, and one could only guess how long the ramifications would be...

Worst case scenario, such a strike would affect INDY IV, should its schedule fall during that time. It's not likely, as Lucas and Spielberg are pretty much committed on other features until 2002, at the earliest.

Lucas has always generated some controversy about the DGA, as he had cancelled his membership (I believe back in the late 1970's) and has made public his reservations about the union (however brief and/or understated his comments may have been -- in Lucas' defense, I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill).

However, Spielberg is a member of the DGA, and Harrison Ford is a member of SAG (incidently, Ford made a contribution of $100,000 to SAG's relief effort this week). But that is not to say that their involvement would be impossible -- if a strike were to conflict during INDY IV's schedule, it is almost certain that all parties involved would be able to work under an interim agreement -- a special, mutually agreeable deal for a specific film, acceptable to the unions, studios, and talent involved. As INDY IV is such a high profile commodity, surely Lucas and the folks at Paramount would come to terms.

Now, Shamalayan's involvement might be problematic in the event of a WGA strike. Remember, Frank Darabont's involvement with PHANTOM MENACE was not to be, largely because of disputes and/or conflicts resulting from his WGA membership. (I must add here that this was not Darabont's fault, and he has had to go on record replying to some nasty rumors and misunderstandings over the film.)
